The Soft Hackle Streamer…

The Soft Hackle Streamer is very simple to tie. Just make sure the marabou you are using has very thin stems. This makes it easier to wind around the hook. I use large mallard feathers as a collar hackle and a few strands of pearl. The fly was originally created by the great Jack Gartside.

The kid and me…

a

Me and super-kid tying flies. He’s only five years old, but really interested. I am looking forward to teaching him the beautiful art of fly tying. Fly tying has been my favourite thing since the age of 10 and it never goes away. As I have mentioned in previous posts fly tying will teach you so much about fish, flies and wild life. Enough to last a lifetime. Can’t wait to go midge fishing for small brownies with this guy and his own flies on the leader…

Tying again…

I am starting to enjoy tying again. I am even tying some for sale this year. I have been tying for almost 34 years so it’s just natural to tire from it sometimes. I’m getting old and grumpy maybe, but I also dislike the “look I can glue a fly” thing, and all the synthetics/plastics that dominates many tiers nowadays. I even use these materials in my own tying, but as little as I can. I mean, there’s a lot of great, skilled and highly talented people out there. I also see a lot of people who should have attented good courses in the art of fly tying.

Well, time for The Undertaker…
